Gertrude “Kay” Peters, age 98, of Osawatomie, Kansas, formerly of Lincoln, Nebraska, died November 16, 2015 at the Olathe Hospice House.

Kay was born October 22, 1917 at Seneca, Nebraska. She was the second of three children born to John and Edith (Carr) Bendowsky. She attended school in Nebraska graduating from Broken Bow High School.

She was united in marriage to Roger Peters on January 16, 1943 at Yuma, Arizona. They made their home in several cities while Roger was in the Navy. They became the parents of three children.

Kay worked in a defense plant during World War II as the lead on an assembly line. She was a homemaker after her husband retired from the Navy. At that time they made their home in Lincoln, Nebraska. She then worked part-time in the food service for Lincoln High School.

Kay had many hobbies. She loved playing card games, especially bridge. She was a member of four bridge clubs. She had an extensive collection of dolls and was well-known for her sewing and quilting talents. One of her quilts earned second place at the Nebraska State Fair. Kay was a big Nebraska Cornhuskers’ football fan.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her son James, her daughter Barbara Sinner, two brothers George and Kenneth Bendowsky, one sister Eunice Garraham, and grandson-in-law Tiny Offutt.

She is survived by her daughter Ginger Kelsey of Paola; two grandchildren Janet Offutt and Beth (Mark) Slawson; 5 great grandchildren Eric (Allison) Thomas, Stephanie (John) McMahon, Kelsey and Alex Slawson, and Molly Offutt; and one great-great grandchild Trinity Thomas. Her second great-great grandchild (Jameson McMahon) is due in March of 2016.

Memorials are to the Paola Lighthouse Presbyterian Church Down Payment for Youth Building and can be sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 605 O’Neal Ave., Osawatomie, KS, 66064.
