Michael DeWayne “Tiny” Offutt, age 49, of Osawatomie, formerly of Paola, died unexpectedly April 30, 2015 at his home.

Tiny was born July 22, 1965 at Olathe, Kansas. He was the son of Billy Dean Offutt and Ruth Ann (Foster) Hathaway. He grew up in Olathe and graduated from Olathe South High School with the Class of 1983. Tiny was quite an athlete, participating in many school sports. In baseball he was first baseman and pitcher, in football he was defensive end, and in basketball he played center.

He and Janet (Kelsey) Thomas were united in marriage on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2006. Their union came with great devotion to one another. They made their home in Osawatomie.

Tiny worked at Lakemary in Paola as an adult services supervisor for their residential facilities. His previous position at Lakemary was as a residential assistant team lead in their children’s Treatment Program. Tiny always felt like his employment at Lakemary was much more than just a job. He considered all the residents his own children. Many times he would bring children to his home for holidays. Prior to his employment with LakeMary, Tiny had worked at several car dealerships as a sales representative. In fact, it was while Tiny was working in car sales that he met his future wife. Janet bought a car from him and after selling a car to her, Tiny asked her out on a date.

Tiny continued his love of sports beyond his high school years as a coach for many years for the Paola Girls Softball Association. He was a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. He never missed any games. He also loved to fish. His favorite fishing hole was at a private pond on property owned by one of his buddies. Tiny was a very kind hearted man who knew no strangers, known to many as “The Gentle Giant.” He cherished time spent with his family and friends, especially his granddaughter Trinity. If you were a friend of Tiny’s, you were considered family.

Tiny could have opened his own zoo with the many pets he had over the years. His current pets include three shihtzu dogs Lilly, Tootsie, and Hollywood; three cats KitKat, Cooper, and Ruby; many fish; and a cockatiel.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-brother Thomas Hathaway.

He is survived by his wife Janet of the home; his children Molly Diane Offutt of Kansas City, Kansas, Stephanie (John) Thomas of Paola, Brandon Offutt of western Kansas, Eric Thomas of Paola, Jesse Offutt of Nebraska, Josh Offutt of Nebraska; his brother Monte (Lori) Offutt of Fontana; his sister Idona (Gary) Hager of Wichita; four step siblings Carol (Mark) Haskell, Donald (Deann) Hathaway, Barbara (Robb) Rumsey, and Patricia Hathaway; one granddaughter Trinity Lee Thomas; many other relatives and friends.

Contributions in memory of Tiny can be made to Lakemary Recreational Fund or Lighthouse Presbyterian Church and can be sent to Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 605 O’Neal Ave., Osawatomie, KS, 66064.
