Jack Keith Bruner, age 86, of Paola, Kansas, died April 21, 2016 at Country Club Estates, Paola, Kansas.

Jack was born at Moline, Kansas on March 10, 1930. He was the second of six children born to Dwight Merle and Ruby (Jacot) Bruner. Jack graduated from Sedan, Kansas High School with the Class of 1948.

Jack served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict. He enlisted in 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1952. As Machinist Mate First Class, his ship sailed to Japan, Germany, and the Panama Canal.

Jack then delved into furthering his education, attending Independence Community College, Kansas University, and Emporia State University. He received his teaching degree at Kansas University and his Master's Degree at Emporia State University.

Jack met his future wife while renting a room from her mother. He and Annabelle Clark were united in marriage on May 29, 1955 at Independence, Kansas. They made their home in Independence, Kansas and became the parents of five children.

They moved to Paola, Kansas in 1960. At that time, Jack taught math, chemistry, physics, and general science at Paola High School. In 1968, his teaching career made a change of venue and he taught the same courses at Osawatomie High School until 1990. From 1990 until 2005, Jack taught college algebra and chemistry for Fort Scott Community College at their Paola Campus.

Jack was an outdoorsman. He loved gardening, hunting, and fishing.

He was a member of the Christian Church in Sedan, the VFW, American Legion, Paola Masons, and a life member of North American Hunting Club.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Annabelle who died December 21, 1997, his son Timmy who died in 1964, and a brother Merle Bruner who died in 2015.

He is survived by his four children Gene Bruner (Robin) of Phoenix, Arizona, Lisa Tice (Casey) of Dumas, Texas, Neil Bruner (Julie) of Centerville, Indiana, and Julie Bruner of Paola; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; his siblings Peggy McAfee of Sedan, KS, Bill Bruner of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Jim Bruner of Sedan, KS, and Karen Peppard of Corpus Christi, Texas; many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Bruner was my chemistry and physics teacher while in high school. I loved him as a teacher and consider him one of my mentors. He is the person who guided me to go to pharmacy school, a profession that I still practice. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My memories of my days in his classrooms are all fond ones. I am certain that I am just one of hundreds, if not thousands, of people who were lucky enough to have him as a teacher. May you rest in peace, Mr. Bruner. I send you prayers of love and gratitude.

Thank you Jack without your help I never would of made it though Algebra or Chemistry. You came to class a half hour early and stayed a half hour late to help those students who struggled. With out you I never would of made it. You will be missed

Still remember Jack Bruner's OHS chemistry class in 1969 and 1970. Lots of fun chemistry labs on Thursdays. Many stories of Bruner's hunting dog's and the field trials were relayed at class time, as some students attempted to push him off chemistry lectures and onto diversionary subjects.

There's so many memories, where does one start? When I was young we lived on the farm at Paola with Uncle Jack & Aunt Annie. My dad "Bud" McAfee worked highway construction and we moved a lot so for a short period of time we settled in our little trailer right next to them.....I got to learn about taking care of chickens (especially Cassius Clay, that darn rooster), raising quail from the eggs in the incubator and the Brittany pups. I used to cringe when we had to dock the puppies tails, ugh! After we moved I spent time with he and cousin Neal deer hunting around Mom (Peggy) and Dad's farm in Sedan. We had fun times talking about our hunts and catching up on each others families. I loved my Uncle Jack and will always have fond memories of the times we spent together.

Jack taught for me while I was the Director of FSCC (Paola). I looked forward to seeing him come in the door. Jack would always have a joke and something funny to say. He had a keen sense of humor. Each time before he left I would get a hug. He was a very intelligent man who enjoyed sharing his love of science and math with others. He passed his love for the subject onto the student. Jack you will be missed, here is your final HUG!

To the Bruner family,

Mr. Bruner was my Chemistry and Physics teacher at OHS in 1979-81. Your dad/grandpa was awesome. My classmates and I respected him and still had fun. We had lunch before his class and when he picked us up from the cafeteria, we didn't daly because it was expected of us to hussle.

I remember the first day of Chemistry. He told us not to "jack" around because we'll be working with chemicals and he didn't want us to blow up the school. Science and Math aren't my "thing" so I was nervous most of the time after he said that. Still I passed both classes.

The following year I was the only female in Physics. He often asked me how I could stand being with those "yahoos".

I talked with my siblings and shared with them Mr. Bruner's passing. I speak for all 4 us and say, your dad/grandpa was one of the best OHS offered us.

I had more classes with Mr. Bruner in High School than any other teacher. He was a great teacher/instructor/mentor to me. My favorite memory of Mr. Bruner was him telling me, "If you do it your way the chances of your success is a lot less than doing it my way." He helped shape me to be the person who I am today. As most teenagers I didn't appreciate or know at the time the impacts he had on me, but now I know and truly appreciate the lessons he taught both in the classroom and outside the classroom. I may have saw Mr. Bruner a couple of times since I graduated a very long time ago, and we had a nice but to quick of a conversation. I don't remember every saying "thank you" for being my teacher or the lessons he taught me and I regret that. As his family, you are definitely aware of the impacts he had made in your lives as father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Don't know all the impacts he made to the thousands of students he taught over his long and lustrous teaching career, but I know the impacts he made on my classmates and me. So on behalf of thousands of students he taught or just me, I want to say "Thank you Mr. Bruner."

I will keep Mr. Bruner and his entire family in my thoughts and prayers.

I sure am going to miss your Dad. I have visited him often at the nursing home. I first met him at the Circle C Cafe where we shared alot of meals together when I would go on break.He and my fiance Kelly became friends there too. We had him over for Easter and Christmas dinner in the past and always enjoyed out visits. He was such a sweet man! I'm so very sorry to hear of him passing. Praying for your family.

I metJack when my stepdad became a resident at Country Club Estates!! Jack was a great guy and I helped him and my step dad Ken Bond with their tomato plant garden last year! Jack went to lunch with us a couple of times and it was a real pleasure!! RIP Jack!!

Mr Bruner was a very intuitive teacher with whom I had the pleasure of being one of his students at Osawatomie high school. Even if you was able to get him off subject by mentioning hunting he was still great at telling us some of his wonderful exploits. He will be sorely missed by many and rightfully so. Class of 93

I attended Osawatomie High School, but never had a class from Mr Bruner until I was an adult learner taking classes through FSCC in Paola around 2000. I hated math and had a real math phobia. Mr Bruner patiently walked me through the Pre-Algebra class I needed to finish College Algebra. He was so kind and funny! At the time, I felt like Algebra was the biggest hurdle between me and a college degree. I was very intimidated, but he made it easy and I went on to earn my bachelor's and master's degrees in Social Work. I just wanted to let you know how he impacted my life and how much I admired him.
