Leona Dennis, age 64, of Osawatomie, Kansas, died Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at the Olathe Medical Center.

Leona was born August 13, 1947 in Miami County, Kansas. She was the oldest of five children. Leona’s birth mother, Pauline (Oram) McRoberts died in 1948 while giving birth to a son. The baby also died at birth. Leona was raised by Maxine Louise (Robertson) McRoberts who married her father James Wesley McRoberts after her birth mother’s death. Leona attended school in Osawatomie and graduated from Osawatomie High School with the Class of 1965.

Leona was united in marriage to Gary Gene Dennis on March 7, 1966 at Osawatomie where they made their home. They became the parents of three children James Allen “Jimmy”, Jamie Sue, and Jennifer Lea. Leona and Gary also had a son, Gary Gene Dennis, Jr., who was stillborn.

Leona was most recently working at the Osawatomie Senior Center as a transportation driver. She began working there December 1, 2009. Prior to that time, she worked as the manager at Movie Mart in Osawatomie for 12 years. Her first job was at Meeks Drug Store in Osawatomie. She had also worked at First National Bank in Osawatomie and as a para at the Paola schools where she was a substitute teacher.

Leona truly enjoyed life. She loved her grandchildren and spending time with her family. She also loved playing Bingo and taking trips to the casino. Leona had a knack for arts and crafts and was very good at sewing especially quilts. She had a huge collection of snowmen and left them out year round. She also collected roosters. She was the proud owner and operator of a 1989 twelve hundred Sportster Harley that was painted like an American flag. Maggie was her beloved canine companion, a pug.

Leona was preceded in death by her birth mother Pauline (Oram) McRoberts, her father James McRoberts, her mother who raised her Maxine Louise (Robertson) McRoberts, her stillborn son Gary Gene Dennis, Jr., and a brother who died in infancy.

She is survived by her husband Gary of the home; three children James Allen Dennis and his wife Gina of Osawatomie, Jamie Sue Homrighausen and her husband Brian of Fontana, and Jennifer Lea Jackson and her husband Shawn of Drexel; three brothers Wesley, Eddie, and Jimmy Joe McRoberts all of Osawatomie; her sister Donna McMahon of Paola; five grandchildren Jimmy, Joshua, and Jenna Dennis and Chance and Chase Homrighausen; and other relatives and friends.
